Lake bled
The notion of a fairytale setting is never more real that at Lake Bled. Here, with its island church sitting proudly in the centre of the lake, a majestic medieval castle atop a cliff overlooking it all, and the magnificent Karavanke Alps providing the backdrop, you will find all the stuff of fairytales.
There is no more magical sight than when the morning mist envelopes the lake and enshrouds the island. As the sun begins to break through and bathe the whole scene in a mystical, dreamy light and soft pastel colours, it’s nothing short of heavenly.
Lake Bohinj
Just a 30-minute drive down the road, you enter the wonderful Bohinj Valley. Wedged into the end and surrounded by the jaw-dropping beauty of the Julian Alps, is Lake Bohinj.
This beautiful alpine lake is the biggest permanent lake in Slovenia and the jewel of the Triglav National Park. With a length of 4100m and 1100m at its widest point, and its spectacular backdrop, Lake Bohinj is a place that will undoubtedly capture your heart and make you long to return.
No matter the weather, Bohinj never fails to produce a breathtaking scene to photograph.
Churches and Mountains
Another alluring feature of Slovenia is the abundance of little churches sitting on hilltops or mountainsides with soaring mountain backdrops.
The church of Saint Thomas (pictured here) and Jamnik Church are just two of the most popular scenes to photograph. In the morning, you are often greeted with the dreamy scene of the church appearing out of the low mist in the valley below and beautiful soft sidelight hitting the church and hillside.
Jamnik Church is lit at night, so it also looks great during the blue hour times.
Mountain passes
The Triglav National Park encircles Slovenia highest and most beautiful mountain peaks. The best way to view and photograph these is by heading over the Vršič Pass and Mangart Saddle.
These are perfect locations to view and photograph the lovely layers of light and mist at sunset.
Below these is the Soča Valley, a lush landscape irrigated by the powerful Soča River, which thunders through the Great Soča Gorge and also feeds several beautiful waterfalls.
